Five Things You Should Keep in Your Car This Winter

Driving in the wintertime can mean driving in snow, ice, and other harsh conditions. While it’s never fun to imagine an inconvenient or dangerous situation, it’s important to be prepared. Make sure you’re ready to manage whatever comes your way by stocking up on some of the most important things you should keep in your car in the winter.

Jumper Cables

Cars are more likely not to start in the winter than they are in the summer, thanks to the weakening effect that the cold has on batteries. Be prepared in case you need a jump to get going.

A Shovel

You never know when you might need to dig yourself (or a friend) out of some heavy snow. Always keep a shovel handy to avoid getting stuck somewhere over night.

Extra Clothes and Blankets

If you get stuck in a snowdrift, your battery dies, or something else happens that leaves you without heat for a while, you’ll be more comfortable—and safer, too-—with extra layers and blankets to keep you warm.

Lighting flares behind your car when you’re pulled over will make it easier for your rescuer to find you more quickly. Plus, flares also alert other drivers of your presence so that they can take extra precautions when passing.

First Aid Kit

You never know when you might be stranded or will need to wait for help. Having a first aid kit stocked and ready to go could make a huge difference should the worst happen.
